If I wrote a textbook, it'd be called English is Mean.
As a teacher, parent, and ESOL tutor, I often told students, kids, and tutees (?!) that English is mean. Here are a few of my favorite examples.

Bag of glass
When my daughter was young, I asked her to hand me a jar. She said, that bag of glass?
One of the steps in learning a language is being able to say something a different way, if you don't know the word you need.
